Events

Greening Ashwell plans a series of regular events throughout the year in which the whole community to participate from young children and parents, through teenagers, students and the retired. We hope to encourage local groups and societies to become involved, as well as conservation volunteers from beyond the village. These tasks will be carried out through our Green Teams.

Environmental Programme

These are some of the projects we will be involved with as part of our goals -

  • Restoring native hedges.

  • Planting native species.

  • Creating wildflower areas.

  • Regular general maintenance at The Springs (a Site of Special Scientific Interest) and improve biodiversity there by planting native flora such as wild daffodils, native bluebells, and primroses.

  • Creating and maintaining a wildlife friendly allotment at the Forester’s Gate Site that includes a pond, small fruit trees, bug hotels, beehives, and wild flowers.

Conservation Programme

Our efforts to improve the village’s sustainability will include -

  • Safeguarding our specialist flora and habitats by improved management and restoration of depleted natural areas.

  • Surveys of specific habitats and communities will be organised, such as the Ashwell Street ancient hedge line, as part of our restoration policies.

  • Liaising with Local Authorities in order to limit, where appropriate, the cutting of verges so that native flora can survive.

  • Creating our own community tree nursery by harvesting, planting, and nurturing local tree species such as hawthorn, wild plum, blackthorn, ash, and rowan (to name just a few).

Walkabouts
